ATM cards limits: How does this work again?

For many years, the daily cash limit that we could take out of an automated teller machine has been $300.

Today, my wife and I received new ATM cards from our bank.

The new cards say that our “Daily ATM withdrawal limit” has been raised to $409.

How the heck do you get that last nine dollars out of the ATM? All the ones we use only stock $20 bills!

ATMs are a pet peeve of mine – I’m sure the banks put their interns on programming them. Giving them the benefit of the doubt though, maybe the $9 is to cover fees when you withdraw from a different bank?

We have ATMs here in NJ (two that I know of) that will dispense singles. Somehow I can’t resist withdrawing $39 instead of $40. It doesn’t dispense fives, so I get nine singles.
